Public Art Amsterdam is a collaboration among twelve Amsterdam art institutions: Amsterdam Museum, CBK Zuidoost, De Appel, Framer Framed, GET LOST – art projects, LAPS / Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Mediamatic, Stichting NDSM-werf, Oude Kerk Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, TAAK and Zone2Source.
The collaboration is based on a shared interest – and concern – about the development of public space, in particular in the city of Amsterdam. Based on the desire to explicate the role and importance of art in the public domain, Public Art Amsterdam poses the question as to whether Amsterdam based cultural institutions can contribute to the (re)shaping of public space. And in addition, how we can provide access to all the visual and cultural wealth the city has to offer.
In this alliance, P.A.A. aims to raise the topic in a broad-based manner. The participating institutions reflect collaboratively on the essential role of art in a city, and invite the public to participate through an accessible, activating, in-depth and inspiring public program. With its public programs, P.A.A. aims to encourage and stimulate interest in, knowledge of and involvement in public space and the role art can play in this. With this, P.A.A. aims to start the conversation of the role of art in public space by connecting it to contemporary issues.
