Arlandaweg - Westerpark
The starting point of the right route
At the first artwork on this route we’re immediately facing a dilemma. Is this the right route? Atrium was made by Herbert Nouwens in 2014. It is also number eleven in the Brettensuite, a route that consists of a series of related sculptures by Nouwens, which connects Westerpark with landscape park De Bretten and stretches out into the direction of Haarlem.
Green and white dots on the asphalt indicate the Brettenpad. Following this route, you will experience a variety of landscapes. From Westerpark, designed by the architectural firm Mecanoo as a culture park and festival terrain, it takes you past the community gardens of Nut en Genoegen, along the offices and the Sloterdijk train station, across the football, hockey and American football fields of Spieringhorn, to finally end in the wild natural park De Lange Bretten. It is almost unbelievable that all this culture and nature can be found along an eleven-kilometre trail.
Someone walking this route on a summer Saturday will witness an array of 21st century pastime activities. Watching Herbert Nouwens’ sculptures is one of them. Another such pastime activity is walking the route of Pay Attention Please! It is on the same palette but does not have green and white dots. The Amsterdam-West route guideline is literally a lot more concrete, namely the A10.
